Lysozyme – Mechanism of Action

Project Type: Molecular Illustration

Media: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD)

Final Presentation Format: Printed poster

This poster was created to highlight the enzyme lysozyme, which takes advantage of the way bacterial cells construct their cellular walls to destroy them. This illustration highlights the enzyme lysozyme’s role in this reaction and indicates where the hydrolysis event takes place. The scope of this image is limited as it assumes that the viewer has a general understanding of chemical reactions and the purpose of enzymes in biological systems. Background information provided is intended to support the context in which this reaction takes place rather than explain how to the reaction itself takes place which is explained through the illustrations.
